Anna Kendrick is reflecting on her career and revealing some behind-the-scenes details about filming the “Twilight” series. In an interview with Vanity Fair published Friday, the actress described the challenges she and her fellow actors faced while filming the first “Twilight” film.
“The first movie we filmed in Portland, Oregon, and I just remember being so cold and miserable,” said Kendrick, who played Bella’s classmate Jessica in the 2008 vampire flick.
“I just remember my Converse being completely soaked through and feeling like, ‘You know, this is a really great group of people, and I’m sure that we would be friends in a different time, but I want to murder everyone.’ ”
The bad weather, however, made the cast grow closer, Kendrick added.
“It was also kind of bonding,” she continued. “There was something about it, like you go through some trauma event. Like you imagine people who survive a hostage situation, and you’re kind of bonded for life.”
Kendrick returned for the film’s 2009 sequel “New Moon,” where she said the weather “wasn’t quite as intense.” “That’s sort of where we all got to know each other a little bit better,” she added.
Kendrick said it can be difficult for her to keep the “Twilight” films distinguished in her mind. “They all start to blend into one at some point, because my whole job was just to go, like, ‘This family of very pale people who we never see eating, they’re really weird, right?’ ” she said.
In the third film, Kendrick’s character gave a valedictorian speech — something the actress didn’t quite understand, since she thought her character was “very obviously not a good student.” Nevertheless, Kendrick said that speech has resonated with fans, thanks to the franchise’s star Kristen Stewart.
“People are like, ‘You know, that speech that you give in that third movie, it’s really sweet. It’s really moving,’ ” she said. “And I swear to God, I’m like, ‘The thing that is happening is you are looking at Kristen Stewart’s reaction to that speech, and that is the thing that is moving you.’ ”
She continued: “I was just kind of like, ‘I don’t know, I’m reading a speech’ and then it cuts to Kristen, and she’s so moved because she’s so talented. People are like, ‘That speech is so amazing,’ and I’m like ‘No it’s just her. She’s great.’ ”
Kendrick’s last appearance in the “Twilight” saga came in the fourth film, where she appeared in a wedding scene. According to the actress, this was the last scene in the film to be shot.
You’re in half-frozen mud in what was the final scene of filming for everybody,” she said. “I get to come in and work for a week or two, and everybody else has been giving their blood, sweat and tears to the project for months. I show up at the end, and I’m like, ‘Guys, we did it. It’s over!’ ”
