KATE, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William appear set to offer an olive branch to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry this Christmas. The royal couple will “of course” buy Christmas gifts for the children of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, despite the reported rift between the two households, a royal expert has claimed. In the couple’s controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry said there was “space” between himself and William.
And on a trip to South Africa the previous October, Harry said he and William were on “different paths at the moment”. He added: “I will always be there for him as I know he will always be there for me.” Royal expert Katie Nicholl, author of ‘Harry and Meghan: Life, Loss, and Love’, claimed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge plan to give gifts to the whole family, including their nephew and niece.
She told OK! Magazine: “Yes, of course [they will send presents]. “They give gifts to the whole family and that includes all of their nieces and nephews.” However, despite the olive branch, it is thought that the Sussexes will spend the holidays in their home in California.
Speaking about their reported decision not to spend Christmas at Sandringham with the Queen, a royal source told Page Six: “There’s a lot that goes into the logistics and the planning of the family Christmas, so of course, staff know that Harry and Meghan are not coming.
“If they were, they would have communicated it to their family by now. “But this is Her Majesty’s first Christmas without her husband, so one would have hoped they would want to be with her.” Prince Philip died aged 99 in April 2021.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to California in January 2020, just two months before they announced they would be stepping back from royal duties in March. Since their move to the US, Harry has only returned to UK soil on two occasions, and neither times with his wife and children in tow.
As a result, Baby Lilibet is yet to meet her namesake the Queen. There has been speculation over whether or not the couple will release the first pictures of baby Lilibet this festive season, as each year since Archie’s birth the royal couple has included an image of him on their Christmas card.
Speaking about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s Christmas plans, Ms Nichol said explained that this year Kate Middleton will forfeit spending Christmas with the Middleton family in order to rally around the Queen, adding that the Duchess “puts duty before self”.
She said: “In the early years of being a family, they did try to alternate Christmas, one year with The Queen and the Royal Family and the next year with the Middletons, but Kate and William put duty before self and we can see that, more now than ever.
“So there is a sacrifice on Kate’s part because Christmas is a very big thing for the Middleton family, but they put The Queen first and make sure they are there on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at Sandringham.
“But, it’s probably a lot of fun for the Cambridge children that they get to celebrate Christmas twice – once with their great-grandmother and the Royal Family and then again with the Middletons at their Bucklebury home.”
