MEGHAN MARKLE and Prince Harry have claimed the title of the ‘most photogenic royal couple’, snatching the crown away from Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex generated more than 2.4 million Instagram hashtags, beating out the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at 2.2 million combined. The Queen and her late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, secured the third-place slot, with 1.4 million hashtags.
Prince Harry and Meghan’s total racked up almost seven times the average figure for all the royal couples included in the analysis. The couple, recently named by Time magazine as among the world’s 100 most influential people, was the subject of a BBC podcast dropped over the weekend by the BBC.
This followed the controversial royal documentary, ‘The Princes and the Press’, which aired on BBC2 in November. It centred on Prince Harry and Prince William, examining their relationship with the British media – as well as the portrayals of the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex.
Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, was awarded the title of the most Instagrammable royal woman ever by this new research.
Photography experts Printique, looking at Instagram hashtags for 24 of the most popular royal couples globally, stated that Kate generated 1.3 million hashtags on her own.
The Queen and Prince Philip fell just shy of 1.5 million, ahead of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana at just over 1.2 million. The Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, trailed behind in fifth place with 362, 640 hashtags.
Royals from across the world featured in the rankings, including Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco occupying the sixth position. King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain followed next with just over 102,000 hashtags, and Queen Rania of Jordan and Abdullah bin Al-Hussein grabbed the fifteenth slot.
Slightly lower down the list than their royal cousins Harry and Wiliam, Princess Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank secured a fraction short of 88,000 hashtags, with royal sister Princess Beatrice a couple of places lower with 68,000.
The Queen’s son, Prince Edward, and wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, found themselves in the top 10, with over 78,000. A spokesperson for Printique commented on the findings, saying: “Royal couples are a source of fascination all over the world, and this data shows just how much online influence they can command.
“Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are an absolute global sensation, from their charity work and commitment to making the world a better place, to their fashion sense and style. “The fact that this Royal duo pulls in the most Instagram hashtags combined is a testimony to their powerful influence all around the world.”
Meghan and Harry had accumulated over 10 million Instagram followers with their joint account, @SussexRoyal. This account, however, has been inactive since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from their duties as working royals in March 2020.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have stormed past this number, now clocking 13.2 million Instagram followers and regular updates about the Cambridges shared via social media. They most recently posted an adorable family portrait, set to appear on the family’s Christmas card this year.
