Meghan Markle told Prince Harry how she was going to kill herself. During the Apple TV documentary The Me You Can’t See, the Duke of Sussex got emotional when discussing his mental health with Oprah Winfrey.
Childhood memories of his mother Princess Diana’s death in 1997 have left him “traumatised” and he started serious therapy five years ago.
Haunted by what happened to his mum in the spotlight, Harry feared history would repeat itself with his wife Meghan.
Devastated Prince Harry said the only thing that stopped Meghan from taking her own life was how unfair it would have been on him to lose another woman in his life, this time with his baby.
He went on: “The thing that stopped her from seeing it through was how unfair it would be on me after everything that had happened to my mum and to now be put in a position of losing another woman in my life, with a baby inside of her, our baby.
“The scariest thing for her was her clarity of thought. She hadn’t ‘lost it.’… She was completely sane. Yet in the quiet of night, these thoughts woke her up.”Admittedly he said it was “incredibly triggering” to think he was going to lose another important woman in his life.
He told Oprah: “My mother was chased to her death when she was in a relationship with someone who wasn’t white, and now look what’s happened. You’re talking about history repeating itself? They’re not going to stop until she dies.”
He added: “It’s incredibly triggering to potentially lose another woman in my life.”Harry confessed he was “somewhat” ashamed of how he dealt with her dark thoughts.
He said: “I’m somewhat ashamed of the way that I dealt with them.
“And of course, because of the system that we were in and the responsibilities and the duties that we had, we had a quick cuddle and then we had to get changed to jump in a convoy with a police escort and drive to the Royal Albert Hall for a charity event. Then step out into a wall of cameras and pretend as though everything’s okay.
“There wasn’t an option to say, ‘you know what, tonight, we’re not going to go’ because just imagine the stories that come from that.”
Elsewhere in the documentary, Harry accused the Royal family of “total neglect” as he told how he asked for help against the attacks online against him and his wife.He said: “Every single ask, request, warning, whatever it is, to stop just got met with total silence or total neglect.”
Adding: “We spent four years trying to make it work. We did everything that we possibly could to stay there and carry on doing the role and doing the job.”
His fears come after Meghan told the world she was suicidal during her first pregnancy. She said: “But I knew that if I didn’t say that [to Harry], I would do it [hurt myself]… and I just didn’t want to be alive anymore. That was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”
Harry and Meghan stepped down from Royal duties and quit the UK.
The couple moved across the pond to Canada and now have settled in Los Angeles. They have been living among A-list stars where they have made many celebrity friends.
Happy as ever, they have been raising their son Archie and expect their baby girl soon.
