Prince William and Kate Middleton fell in love after meeting at St Andrew’s University but while his family wanted him to propose, William had some reservations. Prince William and Kate had been dating on and off for around 10 years before he finally popped the question. But what took him so long?
Kate and William started off as friends after meeting at St Andrew’s University when they were 19, and with them both living in the same house, their relationship quickly blossomed. And while many predicted that William would propose soon after they graduated in 2005, it didn’t happen.
It wasn’t until many years later that William asked Kate to be his wife, with his dad Prince Charles famously joking: “They have been practising long enough.” So why did he refuse to marry Kate, earlier? It was reportedly all because of his parents.
In her book, The Making of a Royal Romance, royal expert Katie Nicholl claims William vowed he would never be pressured into marriage before he was ready. She claims he learnt from the mistake his parents made in their relationship and was determined he wouldn’t do the same.
She writes: “He was aware his father had been pressured into marrying Diana because she was deemed the suitable bride.
“He was reluctant to bow to similar pressure and vowed not to be hurried at the altar. He made his feelings clear, telling a journalist in an off-guard moment that he had no plans of getting married any time soon.”But William soon realised that Kate was ‘The One’ and proposed with his late mother’s engagement ring.
In October 2010, a month before the official announcement, while he and Kate were travelling in Kenya, he got down on one knee. Speaking in an interview after announcing their engagement, William revealed how special Princess Diana’s ring was to him.
He said: “It is my mother’s engagement ring.”It is very special to me and Kate is very special to me now as well. It is only right the two are put together. It is my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today.”
The wedding between William and Kate took place in 2011 at Westminster Abbey and was a beautiful occasion. Since then the couple has welcomed three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
