Sebastian Vettel makes ‘essential’ F1 claim as Mick Schumacher return addressed..

Sebastian Vettel claims it is ‘essential’ for German motorsport that Mick Schumacher returns to the Formula 1 grid in 2024. But he accepts it is ‘rather difficult’ to get a seat.

The 24-year-old lost his drive with Haas for the 2023 campaign to Nico Hulkenberg after two years with the team. Schumacher made his F1 debut with the American-owned outfit beside Nikita Mazepin in 2021. Kevin Magnussen would take the Russian’s seat for the 2022 season.

Schumacher brushed aside his battle with Mazepin but failed to score a single point through his rookie Formula 1 campaign. The German scored his best finish of the 2021 season at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He took P12 but only 13 of the 20 drivers were classified as finishing.

Schumacher has enjoyed mixed success during his F1 career to date

Magnussen taking the second drive at Haas gave Schumacher a much firmer test as he met a proven quantity. The Dane also showed his experience on his sudden return to Formula 1. He claimed P5 at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, while Schumacher finished in P11.

Haas would end the 2022 season eighth in the constructor’s championship on 37 points. But Schumacher only took 12 of the team’s total to Magnussen’s 25 via just two points-scoring finishes. He seized P8 at the British Grand Prix and got a career-best P6 at the Austrian GP.

Magnussen scored points in six Grand Prix through 2022 to see Haas retain the Dane beside Hulkenberg for 2023. He also put his car on pole position for the 30-year-old and the team’s first in F1 for the Sao Paulo GP Sprint. Schumacher finished qualifying in Brazil down in 20th.

Without a 2023 race seat, Schumacher accepted the role of reserve driver to Lewis Hamilton and George Russell at Mercedes. He has spent the year in the Silver Arrows’ garage learning the ins and outs of the team. But a 2024 race seat remains his target as his options dwindle.

Vettel believes Schumacher’s return is ‘essential’ for German motorsport

Four drives remain possible with Williams, Alfa Romeo and AlphaTauri yet to reveal their line-ups. So, Schumacher could still replace Logan Sargeant at Williams, Zhou Guanyu at Alfa Romeo as the team returns to Sauber branding or get into the Red Bull family at AlphaTauri.

A return to F1 with Williams or Alfa Romeo would be Schumacher’s best chance of finding a seat. But four-time F1 champion Vettel accepts it is ‘difficult’ to see his mentee on the grid in 2024. Even though Vettel claims Schumacher returning to F1 is vital for German motorsport.

“The situation is difficult at the moment,” Vettel told Sky Germany “There is, perhaps, still a single cockpit and, at the moment, it is not that easy or rather difficult to get in there and slide in. But there is always some possibility.

“I think it’s important that things continue in a certain way for him next year – that he continues to work on the second chance. From a German perspective, it’s essential. He’s not just the biggest young talent but perhaps even the only one at the moment.”

There are no German drivers competing in Formula 2 during the 2023 season, while just two drove in Formula 3. Oliver Goethe was the highest-placed German at the end of the 2023 F3 season in P8. Sophia Floersch ended the year in P23 having scored points in just one race.
